Maps & Google Translate
Getting somewhere new, and being understood when you arrive, is real independence. Two free apps do it: Google Maps finds the way, and Google Translate speaks for you. Here is how to use both - by voice, without typing.
By the end you will
- Get walking, driving or bus directions with Google Maps.
- Find nearby essentials - pharmacy, urgent care, market - by voice.
- Share your live location with family, and stop sharing afterward.
- Use Google Translate's Conversation and Camera modes - and know when to ask for a real interpreter.
Lessons
5.1 Directions and nearby places
Search, Directions, Start - then follow the voice and the blue arrow. Saying “pharmacy” or “market” shows the nearest ones, with hours and phone numbers.
5.2 Share your location, then stop
Live location is a free safety habit with family. Choose who and for how long, and stop it whenever you like.
5.3 Google Translate: talk and read
Google Translate is free on iPhone and Android. Conversation mode speaks for you; Camera mode reads signs and letters. For health and legal matters, ask for a professional interpreter too.
5.4 Important letters and fake apps
Translate to understand, then ask a person before you act on anything important. The real Maps and Translate are free and never ask for a password or a card.
Remember this
- Search bar → say the place → Directions → Start.
- Say “pharmacy,” “urgent care” or “market” to find help nearby.
- Share your live location with family - and stop sharing afterward.
- Google Translate: Conversation to talk, Camera to read. Both free.
- Doctor or legal matter? Ask for a professional interpreter too.
