Speak Instead of Typing
Typing on a small keyboard - with all its accent marks - is hard on anyone's eyes and fingers. You don't have to. Your phone can send your own voice, or write down what you say. Here are three steps, from easiest to hardest, and the few things you should never say out loud.
By the end you will
- See the microphone as a helpful tool you control - it listens only when you press it.
- Use your voice for three everyday tasks: a voice message, a text you speak, a search.
- Know the three things never to say out loud: a password, a Social Security number, a bank account number.
Lessons
3.1 Voice messages
The easiest way to message family is your own voice: hold, speak, let go. Listening is one tap.
3.2 Speak, and the phone writes it
Add a keyboard in your language, tap the microphone on the keyboard, speak slowly, and read it once before sending.
3.3 Search by voice
YouTube, Google and Google Maps all have a microphone in the search box. Tap it, say what you want, and pick a result you recognize.
3.4 Your microphone, your privacy
The microphone records only while you press it, and a small colored dot shows when it is on. Passwords and private numbers are never said out loud - to any app.
Remember this
- Hold the microphone, speak, let go - your voice is sent.
- Tap the microphone on the keyboard - your words become text. Read it once before sending.
- Tap the microphone in YouTube, Google or Maps to search by voice.
- Never say a password, Social Security number or bank number out loud to any app.
- Doesn't understand you? Speak slower, closer, in short sentences.
